An incident occurred in which President Trump was attacked at the Hilton ← Japanese X users’ reactions: “It’s staged,” “It’s staged because his approval ratings have fallen,” “Is someone going to die in another staged event?”

On the evening of April 25, 2026, at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner (WHCD) held at the Washington Hilton Hotel,

a gunshot suddenly rang out while President Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and cabinet members were in attendance. The Secret Service quickly evacuated the president, and the venue descended into panic. The suspect (believed to be around 30 years old and from California) was shot and killed near the lobby, and one Secret Service agent was injured despite being in bulletproof gear, but his life was not in danger. The president and all those under security were safe. At first glance, it appeared to be a serious “assassination attempt.”

However, on the Japanese internet, especially on X (formerly Twitter) and in blog comment sections, the following comments immediately began to circulate. “Another staged event?”
“His approval ratings are falling, so he’s putting on a little act.”
“Last time it was a miracle that he only grazed someone’s ear, and this time it’s another staged death?”
“The Hilton is where the attempted assassination of Reagan took place. Did he choose it on purpose?” Why do Japanese people immediately suspect “staged events”? To be honest, the Japanese view of Trump is unique.
Since his election in 2016, he has consistently been seen as an “entertainer,” a “showman,” and a “genius at manipulating approval ratings.”
Even the shooting incident at the Butler rally in 2024 (he was injured in the ear, raised his fist and said “Fight!”) sparked conspiracy theories such as “the fake blood looked fake,” “the timing was too perfect,” and “it was a calculated move to boost his approval ratings.” This time it’s the same pattern. Immediately after the incident, Trump himself posted on Truth Social, “The shooter has been apprehended.”
The media extensively broadcast footage of the “moment of chaos.”
This occurred at a time when his approval ratings were slightly declining (or so some say).

This alone led to a surge of people concluding, “Here we go again,” or “A staged event to boost his approval ratings.”
In particular, the cynical comment, “Are people going to die again?” is based on the fact that suspects and civilians have died in past incidents. Calling an incident that could result in loss of life a “acting” is quite cynical and reflects a typically detached Japanese perspective. What is the actual situation as of now (a few hours after the incident)? The suspect was shot dead, and his identity and motive are under investigation.
The Trump campaign was unharmed and safe.
A historical coincidence has been pointed out, as former President Reagan was shot outside the Hilton in 1981, but it is unclear whether this was a coincidence or intentional.

I don’t intend to completely dismiss conspiracy theories. It’s unreasonable to say that there is absolutely no “staging” in the world of politics. However, immediately concluding every instance is “staged” seems a bit premature.
In the internet age, the calmness to wait until the truth is revealed is also necessary. Nevertheless, the speed and scathing nature of the reactions in the Japanese-speaking world remain as entertaining as ever.
The national character is quick to flag every new episode of the “Trump show” as “staged.”
How will the approval ratings shift? What will the suspect’s background reveal? The next move will surely become entertainment. What do you think?
A real threat, or a calculated show?
